About Kovacs Carpentry
Based in Turramurra, working across the North Shore and Northern Beaches
Kovacs Carpentry is run by András (Andy) Kovács, who trained as a carpenter in Hungary and spent the early part of his career on period buildings there: roof framing, joinery and the restoration of original timberwork. He moved to Sydney in 2011 and has more than 25 years in the trade.
Traditional European Craftsmanship
That background still shapes the work. Alongside new decks and staircases, we take on structural repairs to older homes, from a 135-year-old Queenslander to period houses in Mosman. On jobs like these, the first task is working out what is original, what has failed and what needs replacing.
What we build
The core of our work is new decks and complete rebuilds, along with the structures that go with them:
Most clients now choose composite to avoid ongoing oiling, though we still build in hardwoods such as Spotted Gum, Blackbutt and Merbau. On bushfire-prone land, we build with materials rated for the site’s Bushfire Attack Level (BAL).

Working with us
We are licensed and insured, members of the Australian Deck and Handrail Association, and deal directly with homeowners rather than subcontracting to builders. Most of our work is on the North Shore and Northern Beaches, and we’re happy to travel further across Sydney for larger projects.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most of the decks we build now are composite, largely because it doesn’t need oiling or staining. Hardwoods such as Spotted Gum and Blackbutt have a natural look that some clients prefer, but they need regular maintenance to hold their colour. We work with both and can show you samples at the site visit.
That depends mainly on the subframe. Boards are straightforward to replace; what decides it is the condition of the bearers, joists, posts and footings, and how the deck is fixed to the house. We check these at the site visit. Re-decking in composite over an existing frame also depends on joist spacing, as composite boards often need closer spacing than the original frame was built to.
A deck on bushfire-prone land has to meet the construction requirements for the property’s Bushfire Attack Level (BAL). The higher the BAL, the narrower the choice of timbers and composite boards, and the stricter the detailing. We have completed a number of fire-rated decks and can recommend suitable materials once the BAL for your property is known.
Yes. After an initial conversation, we arrange a site visit to measure up and assess the existing conditions, then send a detailed written quote. There’s no obligation.
Ideally on the first morning, to confirm the set-out. After that, we only need access to the property. The site is cleaned up at the end of each day.
